Root Canal Treatment

Modern root canal treatment to preserve damaged teeth.

When the inside of a tooth (the pulp) is inflamed or dead, root canal treatment can save the tooth. The diseased tissue is removed, the canal is cleaned and sealed tightly.

Modern techniques make the treatment much gentler than before. In many cases, the tooth can be preserved for many years.

How does a root canal treatment work?

After anaesthesia the tooth is opened and the inflamed or dead tissue is removed from the root canals. The canals are cleaned, disinfected and sealed tightly with a filling material. Depending on the findings, one to three appointments are needed. The tooth is then stabilised with a filling or a crown.

When is a root canal treatment necessary?

Typical reasons are persistent or throbbing toothache, strong sensitivity to heat, a swelling on the gum or deep decay reaching the nerve. Sometimes an inflammation shows only on the X-ray without any pain. The earlier it is treated, the better the chances of keeping the tooth.

What happens after the treatment?

Mild discomfort in the first days is normal and can usually be eased with a common painkiller. A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle, which is why we often recommend a crown for back teeth. At the check-up we verify that the tooth remains free of symptoms.

A radiant smile can be enchanting.
