Tartar Removal
Removal of hard deposits for healthy gums.
Tartar forms when minerals from saliva accumulate in dental plaque. The hard deposits cannot be removed by normal brushing and can lead to gum disease.
During tartar removal, the deposits are gently removed with special instruments. We recommend regular check-ups and removal as part of preventive care.
How does tartar removal work?
The hard deposits are loosened from the teeth and gum margins with ultrasound and fine hand instruments. We then polish the surfaces so that new deposits build up more slowly. The treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes and is possible without anaesthesia when the gums are healthy.
How often should tartar be removed?
How quickly tartar forms varies from person to person. For most patients removal once or twice a year as part of the check-up is enough. Those prone to heavy tartar build-up benefit from shorter intervals.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
Statutory health insurers pay for tartar removal once a year. The more comprehensive professional dental cleaning goes beyond that and is subsidised by many insurers. We discuss what makes sense for you at the check-up.
